Chesterwood Residency

By Grigori Fateyev, RA principal

This summer, I had the privilege of working at Chesterwood, a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, as part of Berkshire Art Center's architecture residency program. This experience provided wonderful access to the grounds and the documents in the archive. This opportunity to study the estate's design offered a unique insight into Daniel Chester-French and Henry Bacon's creative process. Collaboration between architects and artists in the design process has always been interesting topic for me and has informed much of my work, particularly in the many studios I've designed for artists.

The staff at Chesterwood were incredibly supportive and helpful during the process, particularly Michael Lynch, Margaret Cherin, and Ben Perrett. It was also a pleasure engaging with the other artists on residency at Chesterwood, Dai Ban, and Kyle Strack. Seeing the creative processes behind their unique sculptural works was inspirational. I am deeply grateful to Kristin Grippo and Berkshire Art Center for allowing me this valuable opportunity.

The show's opening will be on August 30th from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at Morris Center Studio, Chesterwood. It will display works from this residency by myself, Dai Ban, and Kyle Strack and feature an artist talk by each of us.
